BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Brownsville Animal Regulation and Care Center is celebrating achieving a 90% save rate for cats and dogs in March 2024, according to BARCC data.

BARCC's news release stated that in March 2023, BARCC had a 36.8% save rate. That is a 53.2% year-over-year increase.

This year, BARCC has saved more than 3,139 animals compared to 2023, with an average of 285 dogs and cats no longer euthanized each month simply because they do not have a place to call home.

“We are grateful to the Rio Grande Valley community for helping BARCC to achieve this milestone by showing up to adopt, foster, volunteer and by helping to reunite lost pets with their homes, before bringing them to the shelter,” said Taylor Lefebvre, Manager of Operations, Best Friends Animal Society. “This is how we continue to sustain lifesaving through 2024 and beyond—BARCC welcomes adopters from Texas and Mexico—there are currently more than 150 adoptable animals waiting to meet new families."

BARCC, in collaboration with Best Friends Animal Society, has implemented new programs, reduced adoption fees, removed adoption barriers, and helped provide resources to community members needing help with their pets.

A shelter is considered to be a no-kill once they reach and sustain 90% lifesaving for at least four months. According to Best Friends Animal Society, adopting a pet in need and giving them a home is a compassionate choice that helps provide homeless dogs and cats in the Rio Grande Valley with a second chance.

If you are interested in adopting or fostering all pets at BARCC have age-appropriate vaccines, are microchipped, and will be spayed or neutered.

Pets available for adoption can be viewed on the BARCC website or Facebook page. BARCC is located at 416 FM 511 in Olmito.

Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 1 to 6 p.m., Friday from 1 to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
