Alamo’s The Landmark on Tower: Great for beer, live entertainment and food trucks

1 week ago 27

ALAMO — It’s a fresh Sunday night, I’m drinking some craft beer with friends from a self-pour tap wall, entertained by some live wrestling and have the option of various food trucks to munch on. It’s like I’m somewhere in Austin but I’m somewhere better. I’m in Alamo, Texas, baby. #PP956ALV

Putting my Valley pride aside, for this edition of South Texas Flavor, I checked out The Landmark on Tower, a restaurant that serves pizza, wings, has a unique self-serve beer wall, different kinds of entertainment and plenty of food trucks.

I’m actually celebrating my 26th birthday at the landmark and decided, what better way to enjoy 26 trips around the sun by tapping into my inner child by watching some wrestling with friends.

On its Facebook account, Landmark list all the events it has throughout the month. From wrestling, live music and even sport fan club watch parties, there’s entertainment for everyone. I was going to make a Dallas Cowboy joke, but y’all have had enough, but shame on your team for the mediocre football we’re going to watch on Thursday while eating turkey.

New Breed Wrestling is the choice of entertainment tonight and packed the house. I just watched Gladiator 2 Friday night and it’s funny to me that even thousands of years later, people still gather and scream at the top of their lungs for some violence.

Before I make my way to a table with friends, I check out the unique self-serving beer wall — that, as far as I know, is the only one in the Valley?

They have normal bottled and canned beers but this cool system of self-serving beer is for sure something to try out with friends.

After getting a cold mug for the beer, you get a bracelet which you just tap on the beer wall, which has close to 20 options, and pour yourself as much as you want.

The price varies on the selection of the alcohol and charges per ounce you pour.

I poured my favorite beer, which is Karbach Brewing Co. Love Street but they have a lot of options to try out from well known brands to local stuff from 5×5 Brewing Co. in Mission.

The beer wall is perfect for someone that wants to try a little bit of everything, which I did with some other beers, like a Shiner Oktoberfest. Or, if you already have a two or three beers you always get, you can alternate between them.

The mug has a special kind of gel in it to keep it cold for about several beers, depending on how fast you drink them.

I got there a bit late and had to kind of far from the wrestling ring, so I recommend arriving early if you want to fully feel all the hits, moves and drops from the wrestlers.

All the matches were entertaining and really showcased the different athleticism and skills from the wrestlers. My favorite match was Eli BloodMoon vs Nikki Fuego, those ladies brought the BOOM.

I waited until after the event was over to order some food, but unfortunately the kitchen was closed. Still, I had plenty of food trucks to choose from. I did want to try their Landmark Pizza though, which has pepperoni, jalapeños and sweet & spicy sauce.

I ended up getting a juicy and delicious patty melt from Gabriel’s Food Truck. It also came with house-made potato chips and cilantro potato salad. Already a few beers in, the patty melt really hit the spot. It has a perfect balance of juiciness mixed with the cheese, onions and special sauce. I also ordered a loaded potato soup and that also was good with how cheesy it was.

My friends tried the other food trucks, with ranged from pastas, Mexican food and barbecue. All of them had good things to say about their choices.

Before ending the column, I did want to speak on why it is called The Landmark on Tower.

It is named after the historical marker at the intersection. The historical maker is in memory of the tragic 1940 Alamo train crash, where a Missouri Pacific Rail train crashed into a truck carrying around 40 migrant farmworkers. The crash resulted in the deaths of around 29 farmworkers, which caused unimaginable generational trauma for the families who were impacted.

I wrote a story on two passionate Valley historians, who released a book about the crash. I think it’s important to remember and know the significance behind the name.

Overall, it’s a great place for a night out with friends or family with some type of live entertainment. With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it could be something to do with family or friends visiting town.

The Landmark on Tower is located at 103 North Tower Road. Hours are 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 6 p.m. to midnight Friday, 4 p.m. to midnight Saturday and 4 to 10 p.m. Sunday.
