$3 million worth of cocaine seized in Rio Grande City

RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Narcotics valued at $3 million were seized from a Rio Grande City Port of Entry this past weekend, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The single enforcement seize happened Saturday, August 24 at the Rio Grande City International Bridge.

A tractor trailer carrying a shipment of charcoal was inspected at the port of entry using CBP canines, leading officers to discovered packages of narcotics.

According to CBP, 100 packages were hidden inside the tractor trailer that contained 228 pounds of narcotics.

The narcotics are alleged to be packages of cocaine valued at $3,044,859, CBP adds.

“Seizures like these exemplify CBP’s commitment to advancing our border security mission while facilitating lawful trade and travel,” said Port Director Rogelio Olivares, Rio Grande City Port of Entry.

CBP seized the narcotics. Homeland Security Investigations special agents are further investigating the seizure.  

“Our frontline officers continue to exercise vigilance in the cargo environment and their inspection skill coupled with technology and our canine unit all contributed to this significant seizure,” Olivares continued.

CBP did not provide details on the arrest or suspect(s) involved.
