A 23-year-old man is dead and an investigation has been launched into his late-night shooting at the hands of a law enforcement officer in Weslaco on Saturday, a Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman said via email.

Lt. Christopher Olivarez of DPS said the shooting occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Joe Stephens Boulevard in the vicinity of Sugar Sweet Avenue, which is near the Mid Valley Airport in Weslaco.

The man who was shot and killed has not yet been identified and has only been described as a 23-year-old Hispanic male.

The identity of the officer and the agency they work for are also unclear.

Olivarez did say that the Texas Rangers are currently investigating and that more details would be released “once they are available.”
