TxDOT alerts drivers of spike in toll road scams

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Texas Department of Transportation is warning drivers of scams targeting toll road customers across the state.

TxDOT says there has been an increase in toll tag (TxTag) drivers who have reported receiving text messages of a balance due or past due.

The state agency confirmed in a press release they do communicate to customers via email, text and call, however, they do not send payment reminders or balance information.

"TxTag takes customer account security and verification very seriously," TxDOT announced in the release.

TxDOT adds that texts sent to TxTag customers will be sent from 22498.

Customers who believe they recieved a suspicious text, call, or email are encouraged to contact TxTag Customer Service online or by calling 1-888-468-9824.
