BASTROP COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) -- A Hays Consolidated Independent School District bus carrying Tom Green Elementary preschool students was involved in a serious crash on Friday, which resulted in at least two dead, according to officials.

The crash happened between the bus and a concrete truck near Mustang Ridge, the Texas Department of Public Safety told KXAN.

In a news release from Hays CISD, the students were returning from a field trip to the Bastrop Zoo. A total of 44 students and 11 adults were on the bus. The district said parents of students who were on the bus were "notified directly from the campus." At this time, "the district is in the process of conducting reunification."

A DPS spokesperson said the bus was involved in the crash near SH 21 and Caldwell Road, according to an Austin-Travis County EMS social media post Friday.

On Friday afternoon, the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office said on social media SH 21 is shut down due to a crash with "multiple" deaths.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m., medics said two Travis County STARflight helicopters arrived on the scene to transport four patients. Additionally, two patients were taken to St. David's South Austin Medical Center by ATCEMS. Other patients were transported by other agencies as well, medics said.

Around 4:30 p.m., medics said all patients who required transport were taken from the scene. Any further updates, including patient counts and conditions, will be given at a later time, medics said.

Drivers should expect road closures in the area as first responders work at the scene.

This is a developing story.
