Yellow Jackets dominate at THSWPA Regional Championships

EDINBURG — Edcouch-Elsa’s girls powerlifting team ran away with a first-place team finish on Day 3 of the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association (THSWPA) Region V Championships on Wednesday at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg.

Five Yellow Jackets won individual first-place medals, five earned second-place medals and one took home a third-place medal for 63 total team points for Edcouch-Elsa.

Second-place Victoria West finished with 31 team points. The Sharyland High girls team took third with 16 team points.

All 11 of Edcouch-Elsa’s regional medalists punched their tickets to the THSWPA State Championship Meet scheduled for March 12-15 at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg.

The five Yellow Jackets crowned regional champions on Wednesday were Katie Contreras in the 97-pound weight class with a 600-pound total, Addie Anzaldua in the 105-pound weight class with a 815-pound total, Sophia Ortega in the 114-pound weight class with a 740-pound total, Kaylee Beltran in the 123-pound weight class with a 910-pound total, and Natalyn Reyes in the 198-pound weight class with a 1,035-pound total.

Lifters qualified for the state meet by finishing in the top two of their weight class at the regional meet, or by posting a qualifying total for their respective weight class.

The THSWPA Region V Championships conclude Thursday with Class 3A DII lifting at 8 a.m. and Class 3A DII beginning at 1 p.m. at Bert Ogden Arena. Tickets can be purchased at the Bert Ogden Arena box office.
