Woman in federal custody for allegedly smuggling rare Vietnamese chickens into U.S.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A woman was taken into federal custody after allegedly smuggling and transferring merchandise into the U.S., the U.S. Attorney's Office announced.

On June 27, 46-year-old Aransas Pass resident, Jennifer Mayo turned herself in to authorities. She is expected to make her initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Julie Hampton Monday.

According to a release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, from Aug. 1, 2023, to Sept. 15, 2023, Mayo had allegedly imported and brought Dong Tao Chicken eggs into the U.S.

"Mayo allegedly facilitated the transportation and concealment of merchandise imported contrary to law - Dong Tao chicken eggs and hatchlings," said Alamdar S. Hamdani, U.S. Attorney.

An indictment, returned on May 22, states that it is illegal to import poultry into the U.S. from regions where pathogenic avian influenza or Newcastle disease exist.

"The indictment also includes a notice of forfeiture for the chickens and eggs," the release stated.

Mayo is charged with illegal transportation and transfer of merchandise.

During the investigation, authorities seized the chickens and euthanized them due to their health. The chickens are being held for further investigation and evaluation, the release stated.

If Mayo is convicted, she can face up to 20 years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.
