Wing restaurant sets record for kicking out Food Patrol

SAN BENITO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — This week's Food 4 Thought sets the record for the fastest time we've been kicked off a property.

Get coffee with a twist at this week's Top Performer. With a Top Performer sticker, we surprised Sovereign Coffee at 1733 South 77 Sunshine Strip in Harlingen.

Barista, Jesse Garza loves coffee and while the fresh brew is how most people start their mornings, what picks up Garza's performance is the faces of the customers.

"The customers that we get are customers that are very amazing people," said Garza "Like you meet some interesting remarkable people that you never forget and I just love the type of coffee that we serve."

However, this is not just coffee, it's "omakase", the Japanese way of having something specifically made for you based on curated questions.

“Do you want hot coffee? Do you wanna sweet, unsweetened? Hot or iced? We pretty much surprise the guest with the type of drink that we made," said Garza.

That's que rico!

But it's que asco time!

We went to Gigi's Wing Shack at 587 South Sam Houston in San Benito not once, but twice.

Gigi's first inspection was on Feb. 1, with 26 violations out of 74.

They were hit for hand contamination, food being touched without gloves, off-temperature foods, wrong dates and descriptions on food, toxic substances not being properly identified, and a slew of good retail practice violations.

There was an improvement on their Feb. 14 reinspection with 7 out of 93 violations. They were still hit with repeated violations like bare-hand food contact and not properly washing their hands.

All these violations can make a customer sick from contamination.

The first time the Food Patrol visited the owner was not there, but we did speak with Gigi over the phone and she agreed to have us back at a later date.

We came back a week later and she let us know she was no longer interested in participating.
