GEORGETOWN, TEXAS (ValleyCentral) — The Weslaco softball team joins the elite company as it becomes the second Rio Grande Valley team to advance to the UIL Softball State Championship. This marks the first time in program history that the Pantherettes make it to the state championship.

Weslaco defeated the Denton Guyer Wildcats in the class 6A state semifinal with a score of 5-3.

The semifinal matchup took place at East View High School in Georgetown after the original location of Red and Charline McCombs Field in Austin was changed due to inclement weather.

Harlingen South Lady Hawks advance to state championship

Weslaco held momentum for the first five innings, but after a rally from Guyer in the bottom of the sixth, the game went into extra innings. Weslaco brought in 2 runs in the thirteenth inning to clinch the win.

Weslaco will now advance to face the winner between Waco Midway and Humble Kingwood. That game is set to begin at 7 p.m.

This marks a Valley milestone, as the Harlingen South Lady Hawks became the first local team to make it to the state championship earlier today when they defeated Aledo. Just hours later, Weslaco became the second.

The seniors were recognized and graduated on the field as they could not make the graduation that was being held that evening.

According to the UIL website, the class 6A state championship will occur at the Red and Charline McCombs Field.

First pitch for the championship will be at 4 p.m., Saturday, June 1.
