WESLACO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Weslaco Independent School District is providing free meals to ensure kids don't go hungry during the summer break.

'Bus Stop Cafe' is one way Weslaco ISD is helping families who might not have adequate transportation.

The bus, packed with food, travels to three different parks across Weslaco.

Parents can bring their kids, ages one to 18, to receive a free meal and the chance to beat the heat by sitting in the air-conditioned bus.

Becky Gracia, the district's Food Service Director, said this program has been going on for over five years.

It is an opportunity to serve the community by making sure kids have the same resources during the summer that they do during the school year.

"It helps assist our families to make sure that the children are receiving nutritious meals throughout the summer and are ready to start up at the beginning of the school year," Gracia said.

The bus visits Sunrise Hill Park, Judge Gilbert Garza Park, and Gibson Park between the hours of 12:45 to 1:15 p.m., Monday through Friday, and will continue until July 5.

The district also provides free summer meals to students through several different community sites and schools including both Weslaco High School and Weslaco East High School.
