A 32-year-old Virgina man has been charged with intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault causing serious bodily injury for a fatal crash in Edinburg on Nov. 24.

Julio Anibal Poveda Lopez was booked into the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on Nov. 27 on the charges. He remains jailed on a total of $1.5 million in bonds.

He’s accused of being under the influence when he caused a crash at 3:38 a.m. on FM 2812 and Vista Bonita Drive in Edinburg that killed 28-year-old Edinburg resident Itzel Rodriguez Limas.

A probable cause affidavit for his arrest said he was driving against traffic at the time of the crash.

The affidavit for his arrest said Poveda was driving white Hyundai SUV that crashed into a silver Honda Accord that sustained major front-end damage.

“I noticed a strong odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from inside of the SUV. I noticed that Mr. Poveda had a small amount of blood on his face and hands,” the affidavit stated. “I also observed a white powdery substance under his nose and noticed that his speech was slurred.”

Two men and Rodriguez were taken to the hospital where Rodriguez died at approximately 5:20 a.m., according to the affidavit. One of the men had major injuries while another suffered a broken ankle. That man was Poveda’s passenger.

Poveda, meanwhile, suffered minor injuries and was released from the hospital on Nov. 25.
