MERCEDES, Texas – November is National Scholarship/Education Month and with nearly 44 million Americans holding over $1.7 trillion in student debt and many hoping for some relief with the Student Loan Forgiveness program.

Because of this, Felida Villarreal, CEO of the Valley Initiative for Development and Advancement, says the conversation around education and scholarships has never been more crucial.

To coincide with National Scholarship/Education Month, the Rio Grande Guardian secured an in-depth interview with Villarreal. In the interview, Villarreal points out that VIDA aims to empower residents through education and training, enabling them to secure high-skilled, high-wage jobs.

Villarreal says that with a proven track record in workforce development over the past three decades, VIDA has supported more than 6,000 economically disadvantaged individuals in completing career training programs in high-demand fields with tuition assistance, tools, and job placement to eliminate barriers and pave the way for success.

In the interview, Villarreal stresses the importance of education in breaking the cycle of poverty; how targeted scholarships and educational programs can transform lives; and why investing in workforce development is crucial for the economic future of communities.
