McALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral)  — New numbers from the Veteran’s Affairs clinic show the number of Rio Grande Valley veterans seeking complimentary care for chronic pain is up more than 50% in 2024.

This includes more holistic treatments like yoga, chiropractic care, acupuncture and other non-drug care.

Alfredo Salazar gives veterans these kinds of options through the Whole Health Program, which is covered by the VA Valley-wide. He says it not only helps lessen opioid use, but addresses each veteran’s specific pains and needs.

“Not every veteran is the same. Every veteran is going to be different. Their chronic pain may be a higher grade than somebody else’s, but they sit down with our coaches and our partners and figure out what’s important to them. How they can apply the changes to improve their mind, body, soul.”

Veterans interested in switching to complimentary care can visit any VA clinic valley-wide to get started.
