HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A family-owned bowling alley in Harlingen opened its doors Tuesday morning to welcome Special Olympics athletes.

Special Olympics of the Rio Grande Valley kicked off the bowling part of the competition at Creasey's Bowl.

Tuesday marked the second day of the bowling competition for athletes 16 and older.

"Bowling is actually our most popular sport with all the 14 sports that we have," said Ytszel Trindad Ruiz, Area Program Director for Special Olympics of the Rio Grande Valley.

The Special Olympics of the RGV hosts 14 sports for children and adults including volleyball, flag football and powerlifting.

"Bowling is our top popular one where they always look forward to it," Ruiz continued.

The bowling competition will continue in November at Main Event in Pharr followed by additional events in Brownsville.

"We welcome anyone that wants to volunteer or come check it out, get involved somehow, or cheer on your own athletes from your school districts," Ruiz continued.
