Vallejo challenges De La Cruz to a series of debates

EDINBURG, Texas – The Democratic nominee for Texas’s 15th Congressional District, Michelle Vallejo has challenged Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz to a series of debates.

Thus far, De La Cruz has not responded.

Vallejo wanted to debate De La Cruz in 2022, when both were challengers for the then open 15th Congressional District. De La Cruz declined invitations to a series of debates from independent groups such as the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, the Pharr Chamber of Commerce, Futuro RGV and the McAllen Citizens League.

None of these groups have, thus far, offered to stage such a debate this election cycle.

“South Texas families deserve a conversation about the direction of this country and what Congress can do to make life better for our community. That’s why I’m challenging my opponent Monica De La Cruz to two debates—one in English y uno en español,” Vallejo said.

“South Texas sent Monica to Congress to get things done—instead, she’s playing politics as usual, and the reason why we have the least productive Congress in American history.”

Vallejo continued: “When she (De La Cruz) had a chance to work with both Democrats and Republicans to secure the border, she said no…she opposed bringing down drug prices…and stopped efforts to protect a woman’s right to reproductive freedom—even in the case of a medical emergency or rape.

“Instead, Monica took orders from Washington, turned her back on South Texas, and blocked any progress on the big challenges facing our community. Nuestras familias merecen una luchadora, no una política vendida.”

Vallejo pointed out that Donald Trump and Kamala Harris have already met for a debate. And U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and challenger Colin Allred have agreed to debate each other soon.

“Now it’s time to find out if Monica De La Cruz can defend her record of working against South Texas families,” Vallejo said.

“Estoy lista a defender a nuestra comunidad contra la política que no hace daño y espero ver a Mónica De La Cruz en el debate.”

De La Cruz wanted a debate when she was the challenger against Congressman Vicente Gonzalez in 2020, but Gonzalez declined.
