EDINBURG — The 2025 early signing period kicked off Wednesday as UTRGV head football coach Travis Bush announced the signings of six players as part of the Vaqueros’ second recruiting class in program history.
The six signees include four South Texas high school football products in Bishop tight end Brendon Ray, Boerne athlete Jaxon Baize, Corpus Christi Miller running back Broderick Taylor and Corpus Christi Miller receiver Corey Holmes, along with Plano outside linebacker David Nwabuoku and junior college transfer offensive lineman Gannon Lauer.
Baize, Lauer and Nwabuoku are graduating in December and will join the UTRGV football program for the spring semester.
The early signing period continues through Friday and the regular signing period begins Feb. 5. The transfer portal opens Dec. 9 for the fall period and again April 16 for the spring period.
Jaxon Baize, ATH, Boerne High School
Baize, listed at 6 feet and 190 pounds, is a four-year letterman who started at quarterback as a sophomore and junior before flipping over to the defensive side of the ball as a safety during his senior season.
He’s thrown for 4,590 yards and 60 touchdowns during his career and has recorded 65 tackles, four tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 13 games this season.
Boerne is currently 10-3 overall and will play in the Region IV-5A DII final against Corpus Christi Miller on Friday.
Corey Holmes, WR, Corpus Christi Miller
Holmes is a 6 foot 2 inch, 185-pound playmaker who lined up at wide receiver and as a cornerback and safety for Corpus Christi Miller.
Holmes has brought in 33 catches for 917 yards and 10 touchdowns in 13 games this season, while also adding 260 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns on 21 carries.
Over his career, Holmes has 87 receptions for 1,967 yards and 30 touchdowns for an average of 22.6 yards per catch.
Corpus Christi Miller is currently 11-2 and will play in the Region IV-5A DII final against Boerne on Friday.
Gannon Lauer, OL, Garden City Community College
The 6 foot 4 inch, 315-pound Lauer will join the Vaqueros as a redshirt junior after spending his first two seasons at New Mexico State before transferring to Garden City Community College in Kansas.
Lauer hails from Koloa, Hawaii and earned All-KJCAA honors last season after not allowing a sack.
David Nwabuoku, DE, Plano
Nwabuoku is a versatile edge rusher listed at 6 foot 3 inches and 213 pounds. He’s a three-year letterman who finished with 103 total tackles, 57 solo stops, 20 tackles for loss, 32 quarterback pressures, six sacks and two pass breakups during his senior season to earn first -team all-district honors.
Brendon Ray, TE, Bishop
The 6 foot 3 inch, 230-pound two-way player Ray was a standout at tight end and on the defensive line for the Bishop Badgers.
Ray is a four-year letterman who caught 18 passes for 177 yards and tallied 55 tackles during his senior season. He finished his career with 46 catches for 576 yards.
Ray earned first team all-district honors at tight end all four years and was named District 16-3A DI’s Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2024.
Broderick Taylor, RB, Corpus Christi Miller
Corpus Christi Miller’s Taylor is one of South Texas’ premier backs who has rushed for 5,034 yards and 70 touchdowns during his four-year varsity career.
The 5 foot 9 inch, 175-pound running back has racked up 1,890 yards and 32 touchdowns during his senior season along with 23 receptions for 331 yards and five touchdowns.
Taylor garnered first-team all-state and district MVP honors as a junior in 2023.
Corpus Christi Miller is currently 11-2 and will play in the Region IV-5A DII final against Boerne on Friday.
