TxWIN: It is absolutely necessary to plan for our water future

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The Texas Water Infrastructure Network has responded to a Rio Grande Guardian story on the group’s recent 2024 Texas Water Capital Needs Survey.

The survey was conducted jointly by the Texas Water Infrastructure Network and Collaborative Water Resolution (aka, Water Opinions). The two groups asked Texas water utilities to identify key areas of concern and needs driving their investment decisions.

The survey received a record number of responses, with 246 water utilities serving populations of all sizes throughout the state with varying revenues and present challenges.

The Guardian reported that, based on the survey, the least likely future water supply strategies in Texas include reuse or direct potable reuse, desalination of brackish groundwater or seawater, and new reservoir construction.

In response to the story TXWIN stated on social media:

“Thanks for covering the survey!! It is important to note that desalination and reservoir construction are less likely to be used by smaller communities based on expense, geography and permitting required.

“Reservoirs also require lengthy permitting and land acquisition and are extremely expensive.

“Desalination is a similar  issue – whether you have the ability to pursue brackish desalination or sea water desalination depends on groundwater supplies and proximity to the Gulf.

“Similarly reuse is a growing area of interest as we take the entire water cycle into account for our future needs. We anticipate that this will be something that many communities may have to do out of necessity.

“All of these strategies also require vision and political will – we don’t capture that data in the survey but it is absolutely necessary to plan for our water future.”
