TxDOT plans to brine roads due to upcoming cold weather conditions

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Texas Department of Transportation is preparing for the cold weather and planning to pre-treat the state highways.

According to a news release from TxDOT, on Monday crews will focus on pre-treating bridges and overpasses along state highways with a brine mixture of water and salt to prevent ice from forming on the road.

Convoys will be treating areas in Cameron, Willacy, Hidalgo, Starr, Zapata, Brooks, Jim Hogg and Kenedy counties.

During winter conditions, TxDOT advises motorists to follow these safety road guidelines:

  • Follow the local forecast and prepare for any delays or cancel travel plans due to icy road conditions.
  • Buckle up
  • Decrease speeds and drive to the conditions
  • Increase your distance between vehicles
  • Be extra cautious while driving on bridges and overpasses
  • Turn off cruise control
  • Give TxDOT vehicles at least 200 feet of extra space during brine operations.
