KENEDY COUNTY, Texas – The Texas Department of Transportation’s Pharr District engineer, Pete Alvarez, has given an update on the 2nd Causeway project for South Padre Island.

Alvarez spoke about the project at a TxDOT groundbreaking ceremony for upgrading US 77 to interstate standard in Kenedy County.

“TxDOT is working very closely with our partners, Cameron County RMA (Regional Mobility Authority) to develop and complete the environmental process. Our goal is to have the environmental complete by 2026, which basically will finalize the route location and then get us on to the next step. So environmental schematic by 2026  is our expectation and our goal and ultimately we would then proceed with plans and ultimately construction.”

Asked how important the project is to TxDOT, Alvarez said:

“So, the idea here is emergency operations, right. We got a little bit of a scare with a hurricane a couple of weeks ago. Had that had been a direct connect to Deep South Texas, South Padre Island would have needed to have been evacuated. Obviously, projects like this improve safety, but also connectivity and mobility in and out of South Padre Island.”
