TxDOT lauches effort to 'End the Streak' of driving fatalities

PHARR, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Texas Department of Transportation launched a new effort to end daily deaths on Texas roads.

November 7, 2000, was the last deathless day on Texas roadways.

Workers with TxDOT gathered to honor the over 87,000 people who have died in accidents since then.

DPS Major Rafael Gonzalez says the South Texas District sees fewer crash-related deaths.

He says 86 people died from car accidents this year, compared to 136 from the year before. Gonzalez says preventing fatal crashes starts with the drivers.

“Starting today, our DPS troopers will be handing out flyers outlining some safe driving behaviors will be sharing this message directly drivers who’ve been pulled over and receiving a warning.”

He hopes these measures may finally break the streak.
