Two San Juan residents involved in a shootout with Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputies in 2023 have been sentenced, court documents show.

Larry Palomo, 45, and Kayla Dee Lara, 32, were both charged with two drug possession charges and an attempted capital murder charge following a shootout at a San Juan home.

On Wednesday, Palomo was convicted of both drug possession charges and was sentenced to two years in prison with 615 days in credit.

Meanwhile, on Feb. 13, Lara was also convicted and sentenced to five years probation for possession of marijuana and eight years probation for possession of a controlled substance.

Both of their attempted capital murder of a peace officer charges were dismissed.

Palomo and Lara were part of a larger group of co-defendants that include Luis Guerra Garcia, 49, who was previously sentenced in January to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to six counts of aggravated assault against a public servant, attempted capital murder of a peace officer, possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance.

Also included was 28-year-old Robert Zavala from Brownsville who has had all his charges dropped, according to court records.

At about 10:40 a.m. on June 13, 2023, Hidalgo County Sheriff’s deputies executed a search warrant at 703 Kennedy Street, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The police announced their presence before breaching through the front door of the residence.

“As Sheriff’s Deputies entered the residence, they began to receive gunfire from the south east corner bedroom,” the affidavit said.

The deputies eventually managed to detain Garcia, Palomo, Lara, Zavala and 33-year-old Daniel Lee Gonzalez and two others who were never charged with the attempted capital murder of a peace officer.

Following an interview with all parties, it was determined that Gonzalez, Lara, Garcia, Palomo and Zavala were inside the south east corner bedroom where the gunshots were coming from.

Inside the bedroom, deputies discovered a loaded shotgun, rifle and spent casings.

Gonzalez is scheduled for a status hearing in March.
