HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Texas State Technical College is offering four new certification programs to help fill high-demand jobs in the area. The new programs begin this Fall semester and include Fiberoptics Broadband Technician, Basic Rigger, Phlebotomy Technician, and Remote Drone Pilot.

“We’re able to put some short-term credentialing opportunities in place for individuals in the community that are looking to get into some of these industries, and/or are needing formal training to get a credential,” said Cledia Hernandez, Chief External Relations Officer for TSTC.

She said TSTC is working closely with in-demand industries to place its students. They discover what employers are looking for, and what skills are needed, to try and tailor the training to those requirements.

“A lot of their hiring managers, as well as their HR departments. They’re able to provide us with very specific information concerning the competencies and the skills that they’re looking to hire. Now they’re well-equipped, they’re skilled technicians that can be recruited into these new industries," said Hernandez.

The cost and time commitment vary from program to program. For example, the Rigger Certification Program, designed to meet the National Center for Construction Education and Research Standards, requires 140 hours to complete. Whereas the course for Remote Drone Pilot takes 24 hours, spread out over three days. The cost also differs, depending on the field of study.

“Anywhere from a couple hundred to a couple thousand," Hernadez said, "But we do have several funding opportunities they can be able to look into. We partner a lot with our Workforce Solutions Cameron office as well, where they’re able to utilize some training funds on their behalf.”

TSTC also offers scholarship funding through the institution. Hernandez said the benefits of these new programs are the accelerated pace of instruction, and hands-on training students receive.
