HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — April 30th, 1975, marks the official end of the nearly two-decade-long Vietnam War.

The Vietnam War left a lasting impact on Vietnam and the United States, resulting in long-term social and psychological effects on both countries.

These effects continue to be felt on the 50th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon.

Roughly 58,000 Americans, 250,000 South Vietnamese allies, and an estimated 3 million communist fighters and civilians were killed in action, according to the LBJ Presidential Library.

Approximately 3,415 Texans were killed in the Vietnam War, 146 of which were from the Rio Grande Valley.

Behind the Scenes of ‘Vietnam: A Lost Generation’

The Veteran's War Memorial of Texas, located in McAllen, shares the 20-year history of the Vietnam War with names to honor and remember the Veterans who served.

The Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission also serves as a special resting place for all Veterans.

It is the second official Texas State Veterans Cemetery and is the final resting place for more than 25,000 Veterans and family members.
