Texas Regional Bank to sponsor panel discussion on US-Mexico relations at Texas Tribune Festival

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Regional Bank is to sponsor a panel on Mexico relations at the Texas Tribune Festival 2024.

The festival runs Sept. 5-7 in downtown Austin.

Texas Regional Bank has statewide reach but is headquartered in Harlingen. The panel it is sponsoring is titled: Puente News Collaborative Presents: Madame President. It will be held at Crail Hall @ St. David’s Episcopal Church from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7. 

The panel discussion TRB is sponsoring features former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Antonio Garza, Pacific Council President on International Policy President and CEO Duncan Wood, and Mexico Institute Director Lila Abed. Veteran journalist Alfredo Corchado will moderate the panel.

The panel will discuss what a Claudia Scheinbaum Pardo presidency means for U.S.-Mexico relations.

Garza served as U.S. Ambassador to Mexico from 2002 to 2009. He is a director of publicly and privately held companies and is a trustee at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Garza is a past chair of the Texas Railroad Commission and was Texas’ 99th Secretary of State. 

Wood is an expert on supply chain policy, energy transition, Mexican politics and North American relations. He was formerly vice president of the Wilson Center, director of the Mexico Institute and professor of international relations. 

Abed was a White House correspondent for NTN24 prior to her work at the Wilson Center. She is a collaborator at Radio Fórmula and a weekly columnist for El Heraldo de México and Opinión 51. She has worked in various public institutions, including Mexican embassies in Canada and the United Kingdom. She was the general director for International Cooperation at Mexico’s Office of the Attorney General and was Secretary of International Affairs for the Partido Revolucionario Institucional’s Executive Committee. 

Corchado is executive editor and correspondent for Puente News Collaborative. He was formerly the Mexico Border correspondent for The Dallas Morning News and author of “Midnight in Mexico: A Reporter’s Journey Through a Country’s Descent into Darkness” and “Homelands.” He was a 2009 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University and winner of a Maria Moors Cabot Prize from Columbia University.

The panelists will give their opinions on what to expect from incoming Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration. Sheinbaum, a member of the ruling party Morena, will be the first woman president in Mexico’s history. She will take office in October.
