HARLINGEN — Two girls with eyes dancing and faces smiling moved through the store searching for clothes and toys and all things good and beautiful.
An older boy in a red shirt selected a new shirt, a little girl grabbed a handful of stuffed animals, and another child stooped down to inspect toys on a shelf.
It was the 8th annual Santa’s Closet service project hosted by the Rotary Club of Harlingen at Target, and 62 children identified by the Harlingen school district filled the store eager and happy.
“The children were bussed in by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harlingen and enjoyed a warm welcome with hot cocoa and popcorn alongside Starbucks coffee for the volunteers,” said Juanita Stringfield, past present of the Rotary club.
Rotary club members, community leaders, student members of the Harlingen High School Rotary Interact Club and the National Honor Society were there to assist.
“Each child received a $200 gift card, and the event included festive activities with the Vela Middle School Cheerleaders and the band playing Christmas tunes,” Stringfield said. “All of it was supported by the management at Target. Excitement fille the air as the kids selected gifts ranging from plush animals and backpacks to books, warm clothes, shoes and even a drone.”
One fourth grader, she said, joyfully mentioned that her top wish was a big box of her favorite cereal, which she received.
