SOUTH TEXAS HEALTH SYSTEM CHILDREN’S RECEIVES $10,665 DONATION FROM DUTCH BROS FOLLOWING THE COFFEE CHAIN’S LATEST BUCK FOR KIDS DAY INITIATIVE

For the second consecutive year, proceeds from Dutch Bros’ annual Buck for Kids Day initiative have been earmarked to support the Child Life program at STHS Children’s, which helps Rio Grande Valley children and their families cope with the stress of hospitalization

Depending on their age, children admitted into a hospital’s care may experience fear and anxiety due to a combination of factors like the unfamiliar environment, the sight of needles and strange medical equipment, separation from their family and friends and the unknown nature of their illness or injury.

South Texas Health System Children’s, the Rio Grande Valley’s first dedicated pediatric facility, is committed to helping improve the hospital experiences for the young patients in its care by reducing the stress and anxiety of hospitalization and illness.

Through the facility’s Child Life program, STHS Children’s staff members collaborate closely with doctors, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare team members to meet the social, emotional, developmental and cultural needs of patients and their families.

“Our Child Life program plays a vital role in supporting child health and wellness in the hospital setting,” says Kim Davis, MBA, BSN, RN, Pediatric Administrator, STHS Children’s. “To help minimize the immediate and long-term effects of stress, anxiety and psychosocial trauma, our staff leverage their expertise in helping patients and their families cope by providing important preparation, education, distraction, play and coping tools to children and their families.”

Throughout the years, STHS Children’s has been lucky to count on the support of local businesses and community organizations to help children and their families effectively cope with the stress of hospitalization. Through their generous donations, the facility has been able to provide important patient, sibling and family support services, purchase soothing sensory equipment and patient-focused resources like art, music, recreational and animal-assisted therapy, diagnosis-specific education and therapeutic play.

Recently, the Auxiliary to South Texas Health System, STHS’ non-profit arm that oversees contributions to the STHS Children’s Child Life program, received a special donation from Dutch Bros. for the second consecutive year.

As part of the drive-through coffee chain’s Buck for Kids Day – an annual initiative that gives back to children in communities across the United States – Dutch Bros. gives $1 from every drink sold to local nonprofits that mentor, support and better the lives of youth.

Following Buck for Kids Day in September 2024, the Auxiliary to STHS received $10,665.89 from Dutch Bros.’ 13 Valley locations, a 491% increase from the $1,800 collected from two locations the previous year.

“Being able to give back to South Texas Health Systems Children’s Hospital means a lot to us,” said local Dutch Bros. operator, John Darms. “We’re all about making a difference, so we’re thankful for the opportunity to make a positive impact in our community.”

The Auxiliary to STHS will be using the funds to continue providing essential programming through STHS Children’s Child Life program that helps children and their families feel safe, comfortable and heard during their time in hospital.

“Dutch Bros’ Buck for Kids initiative proves that one day can truly a bid difference in the lives of our patients,” says Tom Castañeda, System Director of Marketing & Public Relations, STHS. “This donation means to world to us, and we’re profoundly grateful to Dutch Bros. and Valley residents who supported this great cause. Every dollar donated will directly benefit our patients at STHS Children’s to help turn a stressful situation into a more positive experience.”
