'Shooting up the school': Teen arrested for alleged threat on campus

EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A 17-year-old South Texas Independent School District student was arrested for allegedly making a terroristic threat on his school.

According to Edinburg police, Juan Gonzalez, 17 of San Juan, is accused of making a threat on Saturday against South Texas ISD World Scholars.

An investigation on Monday revealed that Gonzalez made a comment stating he would be "shooting up the school," a release from the City of Edinburg stated.

Authorities searched for the teen at his home and spoke to his mother. Eventually Gonzalez agreed to visit the Edinburg Police Department were he confessed to making the threat, under the pretext that he was "joking around."

Despite the teen's alleged intent, Gonzalez was arrested on a charge of terroristic threat, a third-degree felony.

"The Edinburg Police Department takes all school threats seriously," said Police Chief Jaime Ayala. "Our priority is the safety and security of students, staff, and our community. Threats of any kind, whether perceived as a joke or not, will be met with thorough investigation and appropriate legal action."
