HIDALGO COUNTY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office is looking for a suspect who left the scene of a standoff Wednesday afternoon.

The standoff happened at the 7000 block of Mile 5 Road in Mission after a woman reported a domestic dispute with her boyfriend, 43-year-old Edward Vargas.

At the scene, Vargas was armed with a knife and reportedly refused to open the door to law enforcement.

During the standoff, deputies attempted to talk with Vargas through a window.

Deputies attempted to fire a Taser at Vargas when his girlfriend intervened by striking it with her hand.

Once deputies entered the residence, they were unable to find Vargas.

Vargas' girlfriend was arrested for interferring with public duties.

A drone search was conducted in a brush field to locate Vargas, but he was not located.

Authorities say Vargas has an active felony warrant for criminal mischief and a protective order against him. Deputies say the protective order against Vargas is not from his girlfriend.

Anyone with information regarding Vargas' whereabouts is asked to contact the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office at (956) 383-8114.
