OLMITO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza is warning the public about scammers claiming to represent the Cameron County Sheriff's Office.

According to a news release, the scammers are reaching out to people and alleging they have failed to report for jury duty and must pay a fine to avoid legal consequences.

They also use the claim of non-payment of federal taxes as another tactic.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages, or social media platforms to request personal or financial information.

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, do not give out any of your personal information over the phone or make any payments.

For verification purposes, it is advisable to directly contact the clerk's office to authenticate any communication regarding jury duty.

CCSO says it or any legitimate law enforcement agency, will not contact individuals in such a manner.

They do not request payments over the phone, especially for matters related to jury duty or paying federal taxes.

CCSO urges people to reach out if they have any concerns or if suspicious activity is encountered.
