BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Democratic candidate Colin Allred made a visit to the Rio Grande Valley on Wednesday.

Allred was campaigning in Brownsville alongside Michelle Vallejo, a congressional candidate for House District 15.

Representing the 34th Congressional District in northeast Dallas, Allred is looking to unseat Republican Senator Ted Cruz in the November election.

Ted Cruz, the incumbent senator, has been in office for twelve years.

Texas hasn’t elected a democrat to the United States Senate since Lloyd Bentsen in 1988.

Allred says he thinks his bipartisanship and willingness to represent all Texans will help him break that trend.

On policy, the congressman says he would support the border security bill introduced earlier this year.

That measure was defeated after former president Donald Trump urged lawmakers to not pass it.

“I want Texans to know, particularly south Texans, that this was $20 billion for border security that no state would have gotten more than Texas. For more immigration judges, for more CBP personnel," Allred said. "It would have helped us secure the border and have more technology. And so to not pursue it, just because you want to have the issue to run on in November, which is what Ted Cruz did, to me is unacceptable.”

Vallejo is running against republican incumbent Monica de la Cruz in the 15th Congressional District.

Vallejo says her day one priority is to bring costs down and make everyday expenses more affordable.

The last day to register to vote is October 7.

Election day is November 5.
