BROWNSVILLE, Texas – IBC Bank Executive Vice President Gerald ‘Gerry’ Schwebel says he thanks God every day that he lives and works in Texas, and specifically Laredo, Texas.

Schwebel says the banking industry in Texas is solid, which gives him peace of mind.

Schwebel was asked to comment on IBC Bank being ranked No. 3 on Forbes’ America’s Best Banks list for 2023.

“I think it’s indicative, really, of the public understanding the importance of who they’re doing their banking with. We’re fortunate that, as a result of the economic vitality of the North American region, you have a sound financial system. And Texas is very fortunate to have sound community banks, not just national banks, but community banks that are engaged in our communities to support the private sector,” Schwebel said.

“And it’s important for the public to understand the importance of who they are banking with as well. I thank God that I live in Texas every day, and that I live and work in Laredo Texas, as well. There are a lot of great things going on. Of course, the challenges will always be there, on the financial sector, because of the regulatory environment that we’re in. But from the economic perspective, Texas is solid and Texas banking is solid.”

Schwebel gave his comments at the conclusion of a recent TxDOT Border Trade Advisory Committee meeting in Brownsville. He is member of BTAC.

IBC is a multi-bank financial holding company headquartered in Laredo, Texas, with 165 facilities and 256 ATMs serving 75 communities in Texas and Oklahoma.

The bank ranked 3rd on the 15th annual Forbes’ Best Banks in America. The top two hundred largest publicly traded banks and thrifts by asset size were eligible for the list. However, only the top 100 were ranked after Forbes’ analysis of ten equally weighted financial metrics that measure factors such as asset quality, capital adequacy, growth and profitability, efficiency and stock performance.

“Our ranking third on the Forbes’ America’s Best Banks list for 2023 is a wonderful honor and one that makes me incredibly proud of our IBC team,” said Dennis E. Nixon, president and CEO of IBC Bank. “Every team member, from the employees working at a branch to the employees working on our corporate team, has a hand in this recognition.”

Nixon said IBC’s board of directors and executive management team sets the vision for the bank. “But,” her said, “it is up to all team members to execute that vision in a consistent manner.”

Nixon added: “We remain focused on continuing to execute on long-standing practices of balance sheet, asset liability, and liquidity management, as well as cost controls.”
