An 18-year-old San Juan man accused of stabbing three police officers in December has been indicted and is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday.
Enrique Martin Ayala is charged with three counts of attempted capital murder of a peace officer, one count of aggravated robbery and another count of resisting arrest.
He was indicted on Feb. 20.
Ayala is accused of stabbing San Juan police officers Anthony Soto, Matthew Martinez, Anthony Meza and a bystander named Anthony Barron with a knife, according to the indictment.
The incident happened around 7 p.m. in the 400 block of Cancun Lane on Dec. 5 after police responded a report of family violence, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Ayala’s mother had called the police because he had pushed her when she destroyed narcotics he had.
“She said that she had to leave to work and was scared to return home and her son to still be upset,” the affidavit said.
His mother stated she wanted to file charges against her son.
Police made contact with Ayala at the front door of their residence and attempted to arrest him, but then pulled out a knife and began to swing it in a stabbing manner toward the officers, according to the affidavit.
Martinez was stabbed in his “chin/neck area and his left ear,” Meza was stabbed on his left shoulder blade and Soto was stabbed on his left upper torso area under his armpit, the affidavit said.
Police attempted to use a stun gun on the man but that failed and he fled on foot toward the inside of the home and escaped through a bedroom window.
Ayala was later located at 1401 Santa Fe in San Juan, which is about a quarter mile from where the stabbing happened.
“After a short struggle, the defendant was placed in handcuffs and transported to the San Juan Freestanding for medical treatment,” the affidavit said.
It was later learned that Ayala ran up to a vehicle at 1403 Pullin Avenue driven by a man who had a child passenger and approached him in an aggressive manner holding what appeared to be a pocket knife.
Ayala demanded the man’s vehicle and attempted to stab him. However, the man placed his hands to block the attack and sustained some cuts, according to the affidavit.
A search of jail records didn’t return any results for Ayala, but the indictment against him said he remains held in the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on a total of $3,250,000 in bonds.
