Edinburg CISD filled the Edinburg High and Edinburg North head coach/athletic coordinator vacancies during a school board meeting Monday in Edinburg.
ECISD named Weslaco High offensive coordinator Joe Peña as Edinburg High’s new head football coach and athletic coordinator, and named Bishop head coach/athletic director Rigo Morales as Edinburg North’s new head football coach and athletic coordinator.
Peña played high school football at Rio Hondo and was a walk-on with the Texas A&M Kingsville football team. He’s served as Weslaco High’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the past five years.
The Panthers averaged 28.6 points per game and won one district championship during Pena’s five years as Weslaco’s offensive coordinator.
Morales, meanwhile, played high school football at Brownsville Pace and also went on to walk-on with the Texas A&M Kingsville football team. Morales began his coaching career at Brownsville Porter before joining Corpus Christi Carroll’s coaching staff. He went on to become the defensive coordinator at Carroll before being named Bishop’s head coach in 2022.
During his three years at Bishop, he led the Badgers to two co-district championships, one playoff victory and compiled a 14-19 overall record.
