MERCEDES, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A San Benito High School FFA student won the grand championship with his steer Chief.

Juan Roel Abrego won the grand championship Friday just days after speaking with ValleyCentral about his odds.

Abrego said he has placed in FFA competitions in the past but always fell short of the grand championship.

This year that has changed.

Abrego and his vocal steer Chief took home to grand prize and another one of their classmates Alexis Sanchez took home the reserve grand champion title with her steer.

In his interview with ValleyCentral, Abrego said judges look at the bone structure, percentage of fat on a steer and the amount of muscle on them.

When asked if this would be the year that they take home the title, Abrego replied that he belived it would be. His intuition was correct!

Congratulations to the two San Benito students on their great accomplishment!
