EDINBURG — Edinburg Vela cut the Smithson Valley lead to 10-7 with 9 minutes, 20 seconds left in the second quarter when senior quarterback Geoffrey Lefevre found fellow senior Juan Garza for a 23-yard touchdown.
It was all Smithson Valley after that.
The Rangers went on to score 45 points to defeat the SaberCats 55-13 Friday night in a Class 5A DI area title game at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg.
It was three first-half turnovers that did the SaberCats in. Lefevre was picked off three times and the Rangers capitalized to go up 41-7 at the half.
Smithson Valley quarterback Cade Spradling accounted for five total touchdowns. His first a 23-yard pass to his tight end Preston Barker and immediate answer to Lefevre’s touchdown with a 53-yard run.
Spradling ran in another before Rangers running back Bradley Sowersby joined the party with touchdown runs from 73 yards and 12 yards.
Spradling walked in from nine yards after a block punt set the Rangers up deep in the SaberCats red zone. Spradling scored his final touchdown when he picked off Lefevre to make it 55-7.
Lefevre found Garza again from 63 yards out for their final connection of the season.
The SaberCats finished the season 11-1 and the District 16-5A DI champions in their first season under head coach Ernie Alonzo.
