MCALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Silver Ribbon Community Partners hosted a free fan giveaway on Wednesday for the elderly and disabled adults to stay cool in the summer months.

The non-profit organization assisted the Adult Protective Services (APS) with the Beat the Heat fan giveaway.

The inspiration to distribute the fans came from the clients according to the Silver Ribbon Community.

"A lot of them are limited with income," said Dee Ochoa, Program Director for Silver Ribbon Community Partners. "They either get Social Security or they get assistance from their family members, but they are below poverty. We wanted to do something that could help them remain safe and in a good environment. So, this was a way we thought we could help them out."

The supply of fans was provided by the United Way of South Texas Community Impact Grant which funded the purchase of fans.
