RGV HS Boys Soccer Roundup: McHi outlasts PSJA North, clinches playoff berth

5 hours ago 18

The second-half of McAllen High’s district schedule has been quite the opposite of its first. After opening the year 7-0-1, the Bulldogs struggled to maintain that level during the second round of district.

A 1-5-0 record during round 2 of district dropped the Bulldogs from a district title contender to a team on the verge of missing the playoffs.

McHi righted the ship a bit Tuesday, however, defeating PSJA North 6-4 in penalty kicks. The win combined with McAllen Rowe’s loss to Edinburg Vela yesterday secured a spot in the postseason for the Bulldogs, sitting in fourth heading into Friday’s regular season finale.

With a playoff spot secured, the Bulldogs (8-5-2) turn their attention to their regular season finale against crosstown rival McAllen Memorial.

Playoff seeding is on the line during the match, a McHi winning earning them the district’s No. 1 seed in the Class 5A DI bracket and a date with Brownsville Rivera in the bi-district round next week. A loss or tie gives the Mustangs the No. 1 seed and sets up a match against Harlingen South for McHi during the opening round.

Kickoff between the Bulldogs and Mustangs is set for 8 p.m. Friday at 8 p.m. at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Edinburg Vela 2, McAllen Rowe 1: At Edinburg, the SaberCats played spoiler to the Warriors playoff hopes, while also picking up their first district win since the pandemic.

Vela, who was 0-14-0 heading into the contest, got goals from Azrael Lopez and Emmanuel Lopez during the win, both coming during the first half of the contest.

The victory effectively ended McAllen Rowe’s season, who finishes fifth in the district.

District 30-5A

La Joya Palmview 2, Roma 0: At Roma, the Lobos secured a playoff berth thanks to second half goals by Esteban Briones and Sebastian Rios.

Palmview is just the one of two teams to secure a postseason berth in the tightly contested District 30-5A, joined by Laredo Nixon after the Mustangs’ 8-0 win over Laredo Cigarroa on Tuesday.

The Lobos now have their sights set on a possible district title, needing a win Friday and a loss by Nixon to have a shot.

A win won’t come easy, however, with Laredo Martin coming to town looking to secure a playoff berth of their own. The match is set for 6 p.m. Friday at La Joya Palmview.

Mission High 2, Rio Grande City 0: At Mission, sophomore Romeo Morfin recorded a first-half brace as the Eagles kept their postseason hopes alive, while ending the Rattlers playoff chances.

The Eagles jumped into fourth with the victory, sitting in prime position to secure a postseason berth Friday. A win against Laredo Cigarroa is all Mission High needs to punch it’s ticket to the big dance.

They’ll look to lock up their berth against the Toros at 6 p.m. Friday at Laredo Cigarroa.

DISTRICT 30-4A

Valley View 3, Vanguard Mozart 0: At Pharr, the Tigers secured the outright district title with their fourth straight shutout and 12th overall during district play.

Three different players found paydirt for Valley View during the win, with Edgar Lerma, Anderson Trujillo and Juan Valdez each scoring once.

Lerma’s goal marked his 12th of the district season, the second highest mark on the team. Raul Trevino leads the Tigers, and the RGV, with 44 goals during district play.

Valley View closes out its season at 6 p.m. Friday against IDEA North Mission.
