A Pharr man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after he had fired shots toward a residence, striking a parked vehicle and a shed on that property, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Edward Virrueta Pena is charged with burglary of habitation and deadly conduct, jail records show.

On Tuesday, a Pharr police officer responded to reports of a home invasion and spoke to the homeowners.

The female homeowner stated that she heard loud noises outside her home and initially thought they were fireworks, but then realized they were gunshots.

As she was gathering her family to leave the home, they heard glass breaking from her daughter’s room, so they attempted to escape through the backdoor, but then heard more gunshots near their backyard.

The family decided it was safer to retreat to the garage and wait for the police there, according to the affidavit.

Meanwhile, another Pharr police officer spoke to an off-duty Texas Department of Public Safety trooper and an off-duty Edinburg police officer who stated that Pena knocked on their front door and claimed someone broke into his home and attempted to kill him.

“Afterward, he fled from their house heading northwest while carrying what looked like a short barreled AK-4,” the affidavit said.

Back at the other residence, the homeowner saw Pena leave their home and head toward the 900 block of East Oregano.

Police later found a trail of blood leading them to 900 East Oregano where they found Pena on the floor with injuries to his hand and foot and placed him under arrest.

In an interview with Pena, he admitted to breaking into the residence and shooting toward it.

Pena is currently jailed on $150,000 in bonds, jail records show.
