EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A missing dog from the Houston area found in the streets of Edinburg is reunited with his owner after being missing for over a year.
Beaux the dog, was reunited with his owner, Bianca Joseph from Harris County, early Saturday afternoon.
After being reintroduced to his owner, Beaux was wagging his whole body with excitement.
"Beaux, Beaux you ready to go home?" Joseph said while holding her pup.
Beaux, a Maltipoo, was 350 miles away from his home in Humble, Texas. Joseph said she does not know how Beaux ended up in South Texas.
Joseph told ValleyCentral she never thought it would take this long to find him. She said she thought she would never see him again.
"I saw a post from the NextDoor App, and I thought it looked like him and I thought he had passed," she said. "I got the call while I was at work and I answered, that's when they told me, my reaction was ‘What? You got Beaux? How did he get down there? What was he trying to go, Mexico? What's going on?’"
The reunion was possible thanks to the help of microchipping.
City of Edinburg Assistant Director for Health and Code and Animal Care Services Rafael Gonzalez said in a previous ValleyCentral article, that it is uncommon to get cases like these but thanked microchips for making it possible.
“This is rare,” Gonzalez said. “To get an animal that is seven hours or far away, but we do get animals like a lot of stray dogs. Luckily, some are chipped, they have their microchip, and helps us to locate their owners.”
The costs of microchipping a pet can range from $10 to $20. However, some areas offer the service for free.
A microchip is not a GPS but a scanner that contains your pet's information such as owner, address, etc.
“People have a misconception that the chip is going to track where the dog is going, it doesn’t work like that as the scanner is just in case someone finds him, and we will only be able to locate the owners if the animal gets scanned,” said Cesar Orellana, supervisor for the City of Edinburg Animal Care.
The City of Edinburg took to social media to express the joy that was seen during the reunion.
"Today, our hearts are bursting with joy as we share that Beaux has finally been reunited with his owner, Bianca Joseph! Thanks to the efforts of our animal care officers and crucial information from his microchip, Boe is back where he belongs," Edinburg City Officials said in the post.
