Recent rain putting a dent in the rain deficit

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Rainfall the last seven days across the Rio Grande Valley is a blessing for sure. radar estimates put anywhere from three to six inches of rain across the valley since last week.

First came Tropical Storm Alberto bringing two to nearly five inches between June 18th and the 20th. More recently a second tropical low brought a bit more to push those totals up an inch or two.

The rainfall came in a nick of time for growers and homeowners helping to turn the grass green, quench thirsty crops, and hydrate shriveling shrubs.

Soil moisture is up, way up, at least for the first 6 inches of dirt. Deep soil moisture will take many more tropical showers to replenish.

Speaking of replenishment, a nice dash of rain did fall in our watershed over in Mexico. Several inches of precipitation did fall within the watershed but only enough to move the needle a bit. Falcon Lake is up a little more than two feet but that is a mere spit in the bucket of what is truly needed to replenish the lake.
