Ramos: If we Fly Brownsville, we will be able to Grow Brownsville

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Angel Ramos, aviation director for Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport, is urging local residents to Fly Brownsville.

“My ask to the community is to support local businesses and your local airport. I think it’s important that if we Fly Brownsville, we’ll be able to Grow Brownsville. So, as we continue to look at our possibilities for airline or cargo operations, consider flying from home because you’ll see the product at the end,” Ramos said.

In an in-depth video interview with the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service, Ramos said BRO had an “amazing” year in 2024. Among the new attractions, he said, were international flights to Monterrey. Mexico, and a new restaurant at the airport.

Ramos was asked about the historic “leakage” Brownsville suffers, whereby many passengers have preferred to fly out of Valley International Airport in Harlingen. He said Brownsville was starting to lure those passengers back.

“It’s an interesting scenario here in the Valley because we have three airports that are in close proximity to each other. So, a lot of the passengers choose, sometimes on fare or the time of day. So, they could choose any other airport and still be able to make it to where they need to go. But a lot of people love flying out of Brownsville because they can be dropped off by family members, take an Uber or Lyft, or have the convenience of parking. Some of them may go to another airport, but a lot more… we have changed that a little bit in 2024 where a lot more people are choosing to come back to Brownsville.”

The big advantage for a tourist flying in and out of Brownsville, Ramos said, is close proximity to South Padre Island and SpaceX. The big advantage for business traveler, he said, is close proximity to the maquiladora industry in Matamoros and the Port of Brownsville.

Ramos noted that SpaceX is a big draw. He said the company rents warehouse space at the airport and flies its engineers and managers between Hawthorne, California and Brownsville every week on its own aircraft.
