PSJA Memorial ready to pounce on its prey in a new district

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — PSJA Memorial won't be sneaking up on any opponent they face in the 2024 season.

The Wolverines took Rio Grande Valley programs by surprise a season ago, jumping out to a 7-0 start entering Week 9. Unfortunately for Memorial, their luck ran out, dropping its final four games, including its first round playoff match up with Flour Bluff.

Key pieces on both sides of the ball return for the Wolverine program, such as senior quarterback Ryan Reyna.

Reyna will enter his third season commanding the Memorial offense, a position he's used to. Head Coach Will Littleton allowed Reyna to make adjustments at the line of scrimmage in 2023, and that paid dividends.

While comfortable with the pieces returning, the Wolverines enter new territory come district play. PSJA Memorial joined District 15-5A D-I after realignment in the offseason.

New faces for that district include Memorial, Flour Bluff, Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial, PSJA North and Rivera high schools.

Trying to build off of last year's hot start, PSJA Memorial is far from satisfied. Littleton said, "I just hope the team continues to get better. We know the teams that get better every single day will be the teams that make it to November, December, so when we start August 12th, our goal is just to get better every single day."

Entering the new season with high expectations, senior quarterback Exayveon Banks added, "Some of the team goals for this year are to win the district and make it deeper into the playoffs. That's our main goal, getting a gold ball for our school."

PSJA Memorial kicks off its season on Thursday, Aug. 29, against Brownsville Veterans Memorial.
