HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Good Tuesday morning Valley!
Temperatures all morning long have been hovering around freezing (32°). While precipitation has been falling in all forms, a mixed bag of precipitation as I like to say, thankfully there's been limited impacts. Roadways are wet so take it easy/slow if out on the roads. Winds are strong gusting from 20-40mph, which is resulting in wind chills in the teens and 20s.
So what are we looking at for the remainder of the day? Highs will climb into the mid 30s with feels like temperatures in the mid 20s.
Thankfully our precipitation chances will drop off and skies will slowly start to clear. This is good news!
The not so good news is how cold conditions will be heading into Wednesday morning. Air temperatures will fall into the mid 20s come daybreak tomorrow. Yes wind chills will be colder possibly falling into the upper teens.
As a result there is a freeze warning for the Valley (with the exception of the barrier islands). A cold weather advisory also is in effect for the same areas. Remember, pets, plants, pipes, and people should be protected from the cold! Keep pets inside, drip pipes, cover plants and weather protective clothing when outdoors.
While tomorrow morning will be frigid another big concern is the roadways. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, could become slick and hazardous when combined with freezing temperatures and left over moisture. The water could freeze creating a very thin layer of black ice. TxDOT advises motorists to follow these safety road guidelines:
- Follow the local forecast and prepare for any delays or cancel travel plans due to icy road conditions.
- Buckle up
- Decrease speeds and drive to the conditions
- Increase your distance between vehicles
- Be extra cautious while driving on bridges and overpasses
- Turn off cruise control
- Give TxDOT vehicles at least 200 feet of extra space during brine operations.
On the bright side, the extended forecast shows the Valley warming into the 70s starting Saturday!
