WESLACO 一 Weslaco High has taken care of business against district opponents all season long. The Panthers entered Friday’s penultimate district game outscoring their opponents 432-189 during league play.

Despite their dominance, Weslaco High entered Friday tied for first in the 31-6A standings, sitting at 7-1 alongside the lone team to beat them during district play, the Edinburg High Bobcats.

The Panthers avenged that early first round district loss in dominating fashion Friday, crushing the Bobcats 56-21 to clinch at least a share of the District 31-6A title at Sepulveda Gym in Weslaco.

The Bobcats and Panthers seemed headed towards another close-knit contest early during their second meeting, with Weslaco leading by just four after one.

Back-to-back baskets to start the second brought Edinburg High within one point early in the period. Then, everything changed.

A 13-0 run by the Panthers to close out the half put the Bobcats in a double-digit hole at the break, trailing 27-13. Senior Isabel “Flash” Magallanes led the second quarter surge, scoring seven of the teams points during the run.

The second half proved much of the same, with Weslaco High outscoring Edinburg High 29-8 over the final two periods to secure the 35-point win.

Magallanes finished with a game-high 21 points, while junior point guard Aundrya Arredondo added 16.

Sophomore Yuri Perez led the Bobcats with seven points. Freshman Braelyn De La Garza chipped in six.

The win moves Weslaco High to 26-8 overall and 8-1 in district, while dropping Edinburg High (20-14, 7-2) to second in the standings.

The Panthers can secure the outright 31-6A crown with a win over Edinburg Economedes on Tuesday. Tip-off for that contest is at 6 p.m. at Edinburg Economedes.

Meanwhile, Edinburg High needs a win over Edinburg North and a Panthers loss to finish as co-district champs with Weslaco High. The Bobcats and Cougars face off at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Edinburg High Gym.
