The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office is commending an off-duty deputy after he rescued a McAllen man from a mobile home fire, according to a press release.
At about 10:27 a.m. on Saturday, the off-duty deputy was on his way home when he saw flames and smoke coming from the roof of a mobile home south of Business 83 on 29th Street in McAllen.
Once the deputy learned there was someone still inside the home, he forced his way in and found the man on the floor and pulled the man out to safety.
McAllen police and firefighters arrived to help extinguish the fire before it could spread to other mobile homes while EMS provided medical attention.
Both the deputy and the rescued man were transported to a local hospital where the deputy was treated for smoke inhalation.
“The homeowner is expected to be transferred to a burn unit in San Antonio for further care,” the release said.
The deputy has since been released as the cause of the fire continues to be investigated.
