Days after a 36-year-old San Antonio man pleaded guilty to a murder-for-hire plot during the middle of his trial, authorities have arrested a woman on charges of capital murder, conspiracy to commit murder and engaging in organized criminal activity.
The Cameron County District Attorney’s Office confirmed Friday that Cynthia Margarita Olvera was taken into custody Thursday by Brownsville police.
She was arraigned Friday and received bonds totaling $2 million.
Olvera is charged along with 37-year-old San Antonio resident Charly Angel Carrillo Torres, 40-year-old Jose Arnoldo Rodriguez and Jonathan Xavier Roman Martinez, who on Tuesday pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of murder and was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
Carrillo previously pleaded guilty in September to burglary of a habitation with the intent to commit another felony and has pleaded not guilty to capital murder for remuneration.
He reached a plea deal with prosecutors where he has agreed to testify against his co-defendants. In exchange for truthful testimony, prosecutors will recommend a 25-year sentence.
Rodriguez has pleaded not guilty.
They are charged over the Nov. 2, 2020 murder of 39-year-old Adela Gonzalez Martinez. Carrillo, Martinez and Rodriguez, however, weren’t arrested until March 2021.
Authorities allege Rodriguez hired Carrillo and Martinez to kill his ex-wife. Olvera is Rodriguez’s girlfriend.
A Brownsville Police Department incident report said that Rodriguez went to his ex-wife’s home late on the night of Nov. 2, 2020 to drop off their two children and told police he tried calling her several times, but she wasn’t answering.
He called police for a welfare concern and officers found her in her bedroom.
“Officer Silva then removed the pillow from her face, and I (Officer Goodrich) observed that Adela had swelling and bruising on the right side of her face. I observed the pillow to have a circular blood stain. I also observed that Adela had a cranial caving in the center top portion of her head,” the report stated.
Another report in the case said Rodriguez in 2018 tried to recruit two other men to kill his ex-wife.
In that case, Rodriguez told the men he wanted to kill the woman because he owed her $10,000 in child support. The men never attempted to kill her.
Investigators later learned the Texas Attorney General’s Office garnished $10,000 from him for child support back pay, according to a report.
Rodriguez is scheduled for his next court hearing in early December.
