MISSION, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Mission police have seen an increase in phone scams this holiday season.
Police said scammers will try and get social security and credit card information out of the caller. They will also try impersonating local police officers to get the information needed.
"Hey, I'm a local officer. My name is so and so. My badge number is this. Don't automatically provide information to them," said Mission Police Department Public Information Officer, Arturo Flores. "What happens is we ask you all to come into the police department to get that information."
Police urge the public not to release any of their personal information if they receive a call like this. They also say to try and get as much information from the scammer as possible so it can be reported to local law enforcement.
