MISSION, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Mission High School held a demonstration for a new weapon detection software on Monday.

Programmed by Angel Protection, they look to help response times against school shootings.

Its new weapon detection software looks to close the average time between weapons spotted on campus and calling 9-1-1 in as little as three seconds.

"We have a big brother in the sky looking at someone trying to get in our campus with some type of weapon or something that's gonna harm our students, it really brings assurance to us and it helps us out as administrators," said Mission High School Principal Jose Mejia.

The program uses existing cameras already on school campuses, which keeps the cost down for districts but increases the level of security to carefully watch what is coming in and out of the schools.

“We've trained the system to detect weapons from a pistol to rifle and we use existing cameras we don’t add any cameras or anything to the school system itself, we use existing cameras that are already in the school districts," said Ortiz.

Mission Consolidated Independent School District Director of Safety Martin Castaneda says this new AI technology just adds another layer of security to all campuses.

"The information is shared quickly with our first responders through our communication center here for the school district," said Castaneda.

Castaneda and Mejia look forward to the collaboration and to protecting its students, staff and faculty from shootings.
