United States Customs and Border Protection officers arrested three men at the Anzalduas International Bridge Tuesday after they were found trying to smuggle nearly 7,000 rounds of ammunition into Mexico, according to a criminal complaint.
Axel Giovanny Martinez Mocinoz, Rolando Moreno Gomez and Luis Gabriel Martinez were charged with knowingly attempting to unlawfully export 6,800 rounds of ammunition.
On Tuesday, CBP officers at the Anzalduas International Bridge Port of Entry observed a silver Chevrolet Impala and a grey Chevrolet Tahoe proceeding to depart the U.S. into Mexico “in tandem” when both were referred for an outbound inspection, according to the complaint.
The drivers of the Impala and the Tahoe were identified as Martinez Mocinoz and Martinez, respectively.
The trio had made a negative oral declaration for currency more than $10,000, firearms and/or ammunition, but upon further inspection, officers discovered a combined total of 6,800 rounds of ammo in both vehicles.
In an interview with Homeland Security Investigations and Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives special agents, each suspect admitted that they were aware that bringing ammo into Mexico is illegal.
“Martinez Mocinoz, Moreno Gomez and Martinez each stated they did not possess export licenses that would authorize them to transport such items into Mexico,” the complaint said.
Martinez Mocinoz, Martinez and Moreno Gomez were scheduled to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge J. Scott Hacker in McAllen federal court Thursday morning for their detention hearing, according to court records.
